The V-1 flying bomb, also known as the Fieseler Fi 103, was Germany’s first cruise missile and an early form of an unmanned aerial weapon. Developed by the Luftwaffe during World War II, it was part of Hitler’s "Vengeance" (Vergeltungswaffe) weapons programme. Launched from ramps or aircraft, the V-1 had a simple pulsejet engine, giving it the distinctive "buzz bomb" sound.
First used in June 1944 against London, over 9,500 were fired at Britain, causing widespread destruction and terror. The RAF, anti-aircraft guns, and early jet aircraft worked tirelessly to intercept them. Though largely ineffective in altering the war’s outcome, the V-1 influenced post-war missile technology and paved the way for modern cruise missiles.
