History

The StuG III Ausf. G was the final and most numerous variant of Germany’s Sturmgeschütz III assault gun, entering production in late 1942. Built on the Panzer III chassis, it mounted a powerful 75mm StuK 40 L/48 gun capable of destroying most Allied tanks at typical combat ranges. Originally designed for infantry support, the Ausf. G became a highly effective tank destroyer as the war progressed. It featured improved armour, a redesigned superstructure and often side skirts (Schürzen) for added protection. Cheaper and quicker to produce than turreted tanks, it became Germany’s most produced armoured fighting vehicle. The StuG III Ausf. G served extensively on both Eastern and Western Fronts until 1945.
