History.

The Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a ā€œSchwalbeā€ (Swallow) was the world’s first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Entering service with the Luftwaffe in 1944, it represented a dramatic leap in aviation technology. Powered by twin Junkers Jumo 004 turbojet engines, the Me 262 could exceed 540 mph, far faster than Allied piston-engine fighters. Armed with four 30 mm MK 108 cannon, it was devastating against bomber formations. However, engine unreliability, fuel shortages and Allied bombing of airfields limited its impact. Adolf Hitler’s early insistence that it be used as a bomber also delayed its effective deployment as a fighter. German pilots referred to it as Sturmvogel, while the Allies knew it as the Turbo. Due to its late introduction, it had limited impact during the war. Messerschmitt Me 262s achieved 900 kills, but with the loss of 100 aircraft.Ā
