History.

The PZL.23 Karas was a Polish light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft developed in the early 1930s. Designed by PZL (Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze) and first flown in 1934, it was intended to modernize the Polish Air Force's capabilities. The aircraft featured a low-wing monoplane design, with a fixed undercarriage and a three-man crew: pilot, bombardier/navigator, and rear gunner.

Powered by a Bristol Pegasus radial engine, the PZL.23 Karas could reach speeds of up to 319 km/h (198 mph) and had a range of 1,200 kilometers (746 miles). It was armed with three machine guns and could carry up to 700 kg (1,543 lbs) of bombs.

By the outbreak of World War II in 1939, around 250 PZL.23 Karas aircraft were in service. They played a significant role during the early days of the German invasion, conducting bombing and reconnaissance missions. Despite their efforts, the Karas suffered heavy losses due to their vulnerability to more advanced Luftwaffe fighters and anti-aircraft defenses. Nonetheless, the PZL.23 Karas remains a symbol of Poland’s valiant but ultimately overwhelmed defense against the invading forces.
