History.

ORP BƂyskawica (“Lightning”) is one of Poland’s most famous warships and the world’s oldest preserved destroyer still afloat. Built in the United Kingdom by J. Samuel White, she was commissioned into the Polish Navy in 1937 as part of a modernization program. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, BƂyskawica escaped to Britain and served with Allied forces throughout World War II. She fought in the North Sea, Atlantic, and Mediterranean, escorting convoys, hunting submarines, and supporting major operations such as the Dunkirk evacuation and the Normandy landings. In 1942, her crew famously helped defend the Isle of Wight from Luftwaffe attacks. After the war, she continued in Polish service until 1976 and now serves as a museum ship in Gdynia.
