History.

The Opel Rekord C was introduced in August 1966 and quickly became one of Opel’s most successful mid-size models. Produced until 1971, the Rekord C was known for its clean “coke-bottle” styling, improved suspension and the introduction of Opel’s new CIH (cam-in-head) engines. Among the various versions, the 1700L sat in the mid-range of the line-up, powered by a 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine that offered a good balance of performance and economy for the era.

Although the Rekord C was sold primarily as a saloon, estate (CarAVan) and coupé, a very limited number of cabriolets were built. These were not factory-produced by Opel, but rather converted by specialist coachbuilders, most notably Karl Deutsch of Cologne. The conversion involved reinforcing the body, removing the fixed roof and fitting a folding soft-top, often based on the two-door saloon. As a result, the Rekord C 1700L Cabriolet is an extremely rare variant today, prized by collectors for its combination of elegant styling, open-top motoring and scarcity.

Due to the small production numbers and the fact that many were bespoke conversions, surviving examples of the Opel Rekord C 1700L Cabriolet are considered among the most desirable and unusual forms of the Rekord range.
